I have had Sony NEX-5N at hand for several of each day now; however, I currently have some first impressions to talk about.
First up, it’s an extremely fun camera to make use of. Quick response from shutter and focus. Autofocus can also be excellent in video mode. The face area tracking AF throughout video recording appears to be very smart and smooth completely around.

It’s also very compact – with the largest part being the lens that is rather bulky on the otherwise tiny camera. That’s the character of the beast though, especially considering that it’s an 18-55mm contact lens that’s including in an exceedingly affordable kit package.
In the beginning blush, the photos look great from the camera. I’ll possess some to talk about soon; however, the camera does an extremely smart job with exposure/metering choices. The small attachable flash works very well. It’s essentially a pop-up flash that’s maybe not built-in. For many folks, I believe it seems sensible to leave it on the camera all the time.
Video looks great and audio sounds surprisingly great for an on-camera mic. However, there was an audible clicking or rattle noise that may be heard when recording video. Many other reviewers and users have noted this issue and I will make sure it’s there which a genuine problem is.
Here’s a fast sample from the family movie I recorded.
It’s an extremely obvious sound occurring in normal video capture situations. I purposefully didn’t attempt to “create” the issue. Alternatively, I simply tried to fully capture an average consumer-is scene with my loved ones at the beach.
While I would be inclined dismiss this “clicking” being an annoyance if users will be prone to record dual-system audio and sync a far more pro-audio source in post, this is often a consumer-is camera. As a result, Sony NEX-5N might be easily situated as a camcorder and DSLR-replacement in one package and, therefore, the audio on-camera must be usable. And either way, it’s unacceptable.
I’m unsure what the reason is and I don’t believe Sony has released the official statement on the issue around this writing. The noise isn’t associated with the image stabilization system – since it exists whether IS is switched on or off. Actually, only a light shake of the camera human body causes the click/rattle even if the camera is switched off.
Again, this issue is unacceptable and something Sony must fix. The issue appears like it may be an assembly/mechanical issue, which may likely need a recall to repair it. If that’s the case, the Sony NEX-5N might turn into significantly of a dud available, which really is a shame because it’s otherwise an excellent camera.
Moving forward though, I’m still undecided concerning the overall camera gets a grip on scheme. While I favor a regular mode dial, I’m likely to provide the NEX-5n’s controls an opportunity before I render my verdict. I’ll give Sony credit that the controls are a noticeable difference within the NEX-5. There are many customization options that allow you to just take a bit more get a grip on over what controls are accessible via the buttons on the rear of the camera.

In the beginning blush, the Sony NEX-5N is actually a great all-purpose camera if Sony can easily and efficiently correct the click/rattle noise throughout video capture. I’ll have significantly more on the NEX-5n soon.
